Neilson Street Freight Study

The Neilson Street - Church Street corridor in Onehunga is a major freight route.  It provides access to the Onehunga industrial area including to the rail hub at MetroPort and Toll.  The corridor provides connections to State Highway 1 in the east and to State Highway 20 in the west.  The corridor suffers from significant congestion at both peak and inter-peak times.

In lieu of the proposed East-West Link that would have provided a new connection between the two motorways, PTSL was commissioned to review the corridor and to identify opportunities to improve the movement of freight.  The investigation reviewed the operation of the corridor to identify constraints and areas where freight experienced particular delays.  The study examined travel time information for the corridor which assisted in quantifying delays experienced by freight.

The initial phase of the study identified the key issues for the corridor and a suite of opportunities for improvements, including priority lanes for freight and high occupancy vehicles.  PTSL workshopped the opportunities with key Auckland Transport Subject Matter Experts and with Waka Kotahi.  The outcome of the workshop was refinement to the opportunities and analysis of the measures to determine the potential benefits.

PTSL is currently undertaking further investigation and analysis on options including extending the extent of measures previously identified.
