PTSL carried out a preliminary investigation for Auckland Transport into the operation of the priority controlled intersection which had safety and operational problems. These included motorists not complying with banned turning movements, and difficulties for pedestrians crossing Hillsborough Road and side roads. The investigation considered a number of options for the intersection and recommended the conversion of the intersection to a roundabout with zebra crossings on raised safety platforms on the side roads and a signalised pedestrian crossing on Hillsborough Road.
PTSL worked with lead consultant Beca as part of the Auckland Transport TTEPS Panel to develop the Scheme Design for the roundabout. PTSL assisted Auckland Transport in consulting with affected stakeholders. Beca continued to undertake the detailed design.
The project has resulted in a safer environment as traffic speeds are moderated by the roundabout and the raised safety platforms. The intersection operates with greater efficiency and allows all turning movements to occur. Local amenities are more accessible for local residents with the provision of pedestrian crossings.
