Manukau Station Road Bus Lane Trial

Auckland Transport had developed proposals for an eastbound bus lane on Manukau Station Road, Manukau.  Key stakeholders were concerned about the effects the bus lane may have had on general traffic queues and on the operation of the nearby SH20 interchange.

PTSL was appointed to develop a strategy for implementing the bus lane as a trial that would enable the lane to be quickly modified or removed should operational and safety issues occur after its implementation.  The strategy developed included a range of contingency measures, and key performance measures that would identify if the project was successful.

PTSL provided input into consultation on the project and managed before and after surveys for the trial bus lane.  PTSL designed the bus lane and prepared the traffic resolution drawings and report to ensure that the bus lane could be legally enforced.

PTSL undertook post implementationmonitoring of the bus lane and identified that the bus lane provided benefits for buses in improving bus journey times and reliability, without major effects on general traffic.  From post implementation monitoring of the bus lane, further changes were recommended to enhance the bus lane operation, including amendments to the Wiri Station Road approach to Manukau Station Road to convert one of two right turning lanes into a short permanent bus lane. PTSL designed this additional bus lane including preparation of resolution reports and drawings.  This bus lane was subsequently implemented.

The trial was successful, and the bus lane has been retained.
